Some of the most enduring and timeless country songs came from the seventies. That era gave us some of the best singers of country music of all time such as Loretta Lynn. Loretta sang about what she knew, being a coal miners daughter, and put her heart into every song she sang.
Johnny Cash, one of the most beloved country singers of all time, gave us classics like “Ring of Fire” and “Folsom Prison Blues” in the seventies but kept singing until his death in 2003. George Jones who is 1 in charted hit and widely regarded as the greatest living country singer.
Then you have the “Outlaw” style of country music, led by such legendary singer/storytellers as Willie Nelson. Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings. This style and sound has often been emulated but never really copied by anyone else.
Country music in the seventies was sang by people who lived the lives they sang about and gave no excuses as to who and what they were or how they sounded. When most people think of the greatest country songs ever recorded they think of the seventies and people like Loretta, Johnny, Willie, Kris and Waylon. Their sound never forgotten.

A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To Nashville
Some of Country Music’s most memorable country singers of the Sixties Era inspired a future generation of Southern rock bands and singers. In the early part of the Sixties Era, male and female country singers brought deep roots of Country Music to the entire world. Country singers like Johnny Cash had back up bands or were musicians and lead singers in their own bands. Duos often joined two country stars like Buck Owens and Tammy Wynette or Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty.Didn’t catch that? This explains it.

The Best Country Singers From the Sixties Era
Certain country singers managed to make it to the top ten on national music charts in the 1960′s. Lynn Anderson is one example. Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers also had a hit song as a duo during that era. John Denver sang and wrote many country songs, although not necessarily in the country western genre. The Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs band created the theme to the movie “Bonnie and Clyde” after a decade of fame as top bluegrass musicians. Then there were top country music singers from the Sixties Era like Merle Haggard, Charlie Pride, Willie Nelson and Wanda Jackson.

While country music has been a major genre over the years, it was at its best in the 1950s when innovative artists began changing the way we understood and listened to music as a form of entertainment. Artists like Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash and Chet Atkins were some of the names which helped Nashville turn country music into a multi-million dollar industry almost overnight.

Around the 1950s is when country music began to really turn into a profitable section of the music industry. The movement was centered completely around Nashville, Tennessee. Chet Atkins and Billy Sherrill began producing the sound that made country music more accessible to a mainstream audience, helping the genre to experience a true revival.

When artists like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams came onto the scene in the 1950s, people began to take notice. Songs like “I Walk The Line” and “Tear in My Beer’ really started to hit home with music fans and money began to flow as people bought up records from these artists. Before these legendary singer became known, country music was in the midst of a serious downfall, mainly because there were no memorable songs or artists on the market at the time.

We like the songs that talk more about shotguns than ADT and pride in the country but who are we to judge? Here are a few of country’s best love song writers
Brad Paisley – He’s got a way with words and when he’s using them to sing about his beloved wife it’s practically poetry. His voice alone is soothing but when you listen to his sweet lyrics (or so our wives tell us) you just melt.
Keith Urban – He’s got that breathy kind of voice that makes ladies swoon and he loves to talk about what he knows best: love. His songs are all over the “First Dance” tracks at weddings and there’s a good reason why.
Gretchen Wilson – We love her no holds barred viewpoint on love and her sarcastic take on dating. If we ever get sick of all the sappy sweet stuff on the radio we just put on some Gretchen and laugh out loud.

Rockabilly is 1950s country music infused with the hard-edged rhythms of Rhythm & Blues. Nobody represents the rockabilly sound better than Carl Perkins. As a child, he listened to the sounds of Roy Acuff and other country stars of the Grand Ole Opry. He also heard the Western Swing sound of Bob Wills. But right next to him, growing up in the cotton fields of Tiptonville, Tennessee, were African-American sharecroppers who sang blues and gospel. These sounds came together in Perkin’s own music. Perkins had some regional hits, but it was “Blue Suede Shoes” that brought the sound to the nation. It perfectly added rhythmic elements of R&B to a country song. This is rockabilly.

Perkins wasn’t the only one combining these sounds. Two other guitar-playing singers, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, had grown up in a similar environment. For them, the sounds of the blues mixed naturally with hillbilly country music. All three of these artists ended up at Memphis Sun Studios where they were recorded by Sam Phillips. Jerry Lee Lewis, Billy Lee Riley, and Roy Orbison weren’t far behind. Soon, there were enough young men singing and playing with this sound that a true genre was born.

The sound was wild and exciting. By 1956, young people across the country were buying huge quantities of records like Gene Vincent’s “Be-Bop-a-Lula”. More pop-oriented singers like Ricky Nelson got in on the rockabilly craze. But the best rockabilly music always had country music at its core.

The word “country pop” has been batted recently as a term to define a specific genre of music. Many people aren’t exactly sure what that is. Is it country music that is popular? Or is it country music that has been made to sound more like mainstream popular music that charts on the pop charts with a country touch.

Most country pop artist are country artist that have enjoyed some degree of success on the pop charts as well. These artist are generally referred to as “crossover” artists because of their ability to crossover to another chart and sell well with two different demographics of people that are buying music. It is a method that has been around in country music as far back as the 70′s.

One of the best examples of a crossover country pop star is Dolly Parton. Dolly was mostly known as a country star at the beginning of her career when she performed at the Grand Ole Opry with Porter Wagoner. She crossed over into pop music success in the mid 1970s by having her own variety show on TV and having various famous pop female artist cover her music. She also helped her crossover by appearing in movies and writing songs such as “I Will Always Love You” which was later covered by Whitney Houston.

So the Country Pop genre is a genre that consists of country artists that have crossed over to more mainstream success than their other country music counter parts. The hits keep comin’: Dolly Parton – Better Day

Country western music has developed greatly since its humble origins and eventually paved the path for what is now modern rock music. A great number of memorable, talented men have arisen and become country music legends over the years.

Hank Williams and his son Hank Williams Jr. are among two of the most well known names of country music in America. The elder produced a string of hits including “Hey Good Lookin’” and “Your Cheatin’ Heart” before his 1952 death. His son, Hank Williams Jr. picked up the family legacy and has produced a number of hit songs featuring samples of his father’s previous recordings.

Another larger than life personality from country western music roots is “Ring of Fire” singer Johnny Cash, who kept producing hit songs until shortly before his death. Cash’s most well known modern song is “Hurt,” a breathtaking cover of a Nine Inch Nails song. Willie Nelson is best known for his “love” of the government, his staunch support of marijuana, and his songs “Always on My Mind” and “On the Road Again.” Nelson has expanded his horizons to include a duet with rapper Snoop Dogg called “My Medicine.”

Garth Brooks brought a fresh breath of air to country music in the 1990s with a string of hits, including several cover songs. Tim McGraw burst onto the scene shortly after, winning over fans with his amazing voice, lyrics, and charming good looks. Vince Gill has helped to revive faith in love and country’s gospel roots through his lyrics and often collaborates with other artists.

Other big names in country western music include Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty, and Kenny Chesney. What’s 1 more click? Your boss isn’t watching… Jason Jones and Hunter Hayes, Welcome to Country Music
